Arpi Hamalian has been the backbone of our music projects for the past couple of years. Her pivotal support enabled us to hold our Zartonk Academy in Artsakh in the summer of 2022 where 75 music and creative writing students were given 2 weeks of intensive masterclasses and the people of Stepanakert and Martuni enjoyed a total of 9 concerts. After the academy, Professor Arpi Hamalian (Concordia University) decided to create a Memorial Scholarship through the Atken Armenian Foundation honouring her late sister Sona Hamalian. Throughout 2022-23, numerous students, including war heroes, received stipends ranging from several hundred Canadian dollars to just under 2000 CAD, aiding their educational pursuits.
This year, the tradition continues and Arpi is bringing important financial support to some of the top music talents in Armenia. Donations directly cover tuition costs where needed or, for students from Artsakh—who typically don't pay tuition—to help with room and board expenses. Particularly poignant is the aftermath of the loss of Artsakh in October 2023, leaving these students without a home, while parents struggle to rebuild their lives—in many cases for the second time in 3 years. Does this mean that their children can no longer dream of developing their talent, to reach the highest standards? At the AAF we reject this idea. It is the generosity of souls like Arpi that keeps the flame of hope burning bright for these aspiring talents.
The time is ripe for you to think about supporting a student for the next few years. Do yourself a favour and in these times of consumption and materialism, think of your brothers and sisters in Armenia. Take this opportunity to teach your child about what we call; the gift of giving that never stops giving. Think about it.
At the Atken Armenian Foundation, we guarantee complete transparency in all transactions. Your tax-deductible contributions directly benefit the deserving students without any administrative fees whatsoever. The AAF has a waiting list of students who need your help now. Here are some of the lucky ones:
